The unknown can be scary. But what if I told you it didn't have to be. What if I told you it could actually be fun. We have created a program that does just that! It’s My Next Big Adventure's goal is to support students transitioning to a new school environment with mentoring and leadership programs. Our programs include building students’ self-esteem, developing leadership skills, creating positive friendships, making healthy life choices and giving back to our community. We are passionate about helping our youth with this transition and feel that we can really make a positive impact on our students. After having many discussions with the school systems, business leaders and other respected individuals in our community, I am happy to introduce My Big Adventure to the public.
As the Executive Director of MyNBA, I wanted to share a little about myself and my passions.I am Julie Michaels and it is an honor to be in this role and share our mission with you. I have been a Partner In Education with Marietta City Schools for the last 5 years. Working with the schools is such an awesome experience. It was with the relationships I have made that I have helped develop a new program for these students. My passion for being involved with the schools, elementary especially, My Next Big Adventure, Inc. was created. After many discussions with the school system, business leaders, and respected individuals in our community. It was important to me to be sure we were going to make a difference, not reinvent a wheel, and not duplicate efforts. This led us to the road we are paving now. We have included the potential students we will serve all along the way. We have asked them all kinds of questions from: The color t-shirt they would want, to pick your favorite logo and name for this program. It was the students who chose My Next Big Adventure and the logo you see now.
We are ready to begin our Kick-Off Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Campaign
As we gear up for our program start date in August of 2017, we are looking to you for support. I am delighted to lead this new program and encourage you to learn more about what we are doing. We have included students throughout the development of this program. Conducting focus groups at each level of mentor and mentee to be sure their voices were heard. The students selected the name of the program, the logo they liked best and gave their input on the topics we will cover the first year. My thought was, if the students don’t like it we won’t have a program.
Now that we have students, we are working towards our inaugural mentor program for next school year. These students have been nominated by their teachers under our eligibility requirements. This is exciting! We will be developing the curriculum these mentors will need to have guided discussions with their mentees. Our topics are lined up for next school year. We will be producing workbooks for each student to go over the topics, document what they have learned, and how to use each topic in a meaningful way until the next meeting.
I will encourage you to like us on our FaceBook page and continue to follow our story as we write it.
